Rachel Bellinski just might be one of my favorite people, ever. Like a beautiful onion, she has layer upon layer of interesting talents, thoughts and ideas...but, let's start with her music. She plays under the name Switchyard and the first time I heard her play live I picked up a copy of THE SECRET LIFE OF SPIDERS, her newest CD, and became an instant fan.
The Las Vegas Mercury says this about her music "Switchyard. Bastard daughter of crime novelist James Cain and torch singer Julie London. The velvet female voice tempts you, the languorous bass lines seduce you, the fleshy drums possess you. Beware the smoldering horn section, which-when ignited by the atmospheric turntables and snippets of film-noir dial ogue-never fails to

completely destroy you. The guitars haunt you like that creepy 1955 serial-killer movie called The Hitch-hiker.
The lyrics? They tap you in the chest like the hard muzzle of a .38-just before the trigger pulls"
The Secret Life of Spiders' is an honest collection of dark, introspective songs, written in bed. They are a testament to losing things, looking for things, finding things, ruining things and ultimately deciding that "you might as well be brave" in the face of all these things. Melancholic and full of expectancy, it is the sound of waiting endlessly on a train, destination unknown.
Although Switchyard began as an all-female, disco cover band in Las Vegas, Rachel's been in San Diego for years, most recenlty working on her other talent, writing. Between books and blogs (read her here http://www.switchyard.blogspot.com/) she's taken time off from music for the past few years so her fans are DELIGHTED that she'll play on June 25th at The Zombie Lounge in El Cajon.
