FlawLes and Filmout San Diego

April 16-22, 2010 | At the Birch North Park Theatre.

San Diego's only LGBT Film Festival. Our one-week festival will feature 50 films from the U.S. and other countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Brazil, India, Sweden and Canada, among others. In our 12 years of existence as a non-profit organization, FilmOut San Diego has brought hundreds, if not thousands of LGBT films to San Diego, many of which may not otherwise have been seen by local audiences.
The FilmOut San Diego Film Festival is a time for our community to come together and share in experience - this is something we are truly grateful to provide our patrons.

This year, FilmOut brings more and better movies than ever. More for the girls too, although we always encourage the ladies to join the boys at the theatre, and of course the gentelmen to enjoy the lesbian films.

Hanna Free ( 2009)  | Sat April 17. 12:00pm

Co-Presented By: Brenda Crann/Century 21 & FlawLes
Dir: Wendy Jo Carlton, 88 min, USA.
Sharon Gless (Queer as Folk, Cagney & Lacey) in a smashing, tremendous performance, Hannah Free is a feature film about the lifelong love affair between an independent spirit and the woman she calls home. Hannah (Gless) and Rachel (Maureen Gallagher) grew up in the same Midwest town, where traditional gender expectations eventually challenge their deep love for one another.  Hannah becomes an adventurous, unapologetic lesbian and Rachel a strong but reserved homemaker. Weaving between past and present, the story reveals how the women maintained their love affair despite a marriage, a world war, infidelity, and family denial.

Drool ( 2009) |  Sun April 18. 4:15pm

Co-Presented By: Old Globe & FlawLes
Director: Nancy Kissam, 85 min, USA.
A wonderfully written film that will have you laughing out loud! With a no-good husband and two smart-mouthed kids, Anora Fleece (Laura Harring from Mulholland Drive) is a housewife on the verge of a breakdown - until Imogene (Jill Marie Jones) moves into town. Imogene sells Kathy K. Kosmetics make-up for the cocoa skinned woman.

Imogene and Anora become friends and, eventually, more than friends. When Anora's husband (Oded Fehr) finds them, all hell breaks loose, but the tables are turned when Anora accidentally shoots him dead. Anora and Imogene then pile the kids in the Kathy K. car, throw the corpse in the trunk and ride off on a "family" road trip to bury Daddy.

And Then Came Lola ( 2009) |  Sun April 18. 6:15pm

Co-Presented By: Ascent Ladies & FlawLes
Directors: Ellen Seidler & Megan Siler, 70 min, USA.
This wonderfully fun and sexy lesbian romp takes a whiz bang tour through the streets of San Francisco as photographer Lola (the beautifully athletic Ashleigh Sumner) races to get to a crucial meeting on time. As usual, Lola is running late. Her job and her girlfriend Casey (Jill Bennett, Dante's Cove) are on the line and Lola has three chances (ala the art house classic, Run, Lola, Run) to make it right. As Lola races against the clock, is Casey falling into the arms of her ex?! Will Lola make it in time? Will she come at all?
A sexy lesbian romp-loosely inspired by the art house classic Run, Lola, Run.

Ghosted (2009) |  Wed April 21. 7:00pm

Co-Presented By: SDAFF/FlawLes/Park Manor
Director: Monika Treut, 96min, Germany & Taiwan, subtitled.
A mysterious love story between Hamburg and Taipeh. The unsolved murder of her young Taiwanese lover Ai-ling leaves the Hamburg artist Sophie Schmitt (Inga Busch) completely disoriented. She dedicates a video-installation to her and shows it in Taipei. During the opening she is approached by a mysterious journalist.
Sophie is fascinated at first glance by Mei-Li, the young journalist. Mei-Li takes her to visit the famous Taipei night markets and tries to seduce the artist. Sophie, still mourning her lost lover, rejects Mei-Li and returns immediately to Hamburg. Shortly afterwards Mei-Li shows up on her doorstep, unannounced. Sophie takes her in and finally falls for her. But soon she realizes that her new lover is secretly investigating Ai-ling's death. Strange happenings occur, sudden flashes of recollection come and go, and then Sophie finds out that there is no Mei-Li working for a Taiwanese newspaper and that no one by that name ever entered Germany.
